The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is looking for a Veterinarian Technician III to support research and program objectives at the Naval Medical Research Unit ‐ San Antonio (NAMRU‐SA). HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to NAMRU-SA at Fort Sam Houston, TX.


  • Responsible for supporting animal based research applying the latest scientific knowledge towards the solution of a broad range of theoretical and practical problems in the areas of hemorrhage and resuscitation, transplant surgery, immunomodulation, and directed energy bioeffects, including:
  • Conduct and support surgical procedure, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention and health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, record keeping, insuring specific pathogen free techniques;
  • Daily handle and restrain various small and large animal species;
  • Maintain traffic patterns, sterile equipment, pest control, quality assurance procedures and record keeping;
  • Conduct daily and weekly inspections or areas of responsibility to ensure compliance with standards;
  • Coordinating animal procurement and shipping procedures;
  • Assist in ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies;
  • Coordinate animal research work activities between Research Scientist, animal care staff, and research laboratory technicians;
  • Oversee the work of more junior level staff;
  • Set up, operate, modify and maintain laboratory equipment and apparatus; and
  • Provide additional functionality incidental to research activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

  • Ability to coordinate the implementation of animal based research studies.
  • Ability to develop, organize and maintain the research databases.
  • Ability to coordinate animal research activities with junior level animal technician Research
  • Scientist, and laboratory technicians.
  • Ability to serve in role of vivarium manager, including maintenance of daily operations, supply stocks, consumable supplies, and equipment maintenance.
  • Must have extensive experience and hands‐on knowledge animal husbandry, animal care & maintenance, and animal genetics.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of computer software, including the Microsoft Office Suite.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:

  • Must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical or Animal Science with at least seven years of experience or an Associate Degree with at least ten years of experience. 
  • Must acquire certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Technologist (LATG) by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Sciences (AALAS).
