HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow II to support the Radiation Countermeasure Program in the Scientific Research Division at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI), Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) located in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to AFRRI & USU.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing and supervising research projects, writing review and manuscripts, investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems.

Responsibilities:                                                                               

  • Responsible of planning and executing Radiation Countermeasure Screening and Development study in mice exposed to whole body gamma-radiation, coordinate with other lab personnel for execution
  • Responsible of planning and executing Radiation Countermeasure Screening and Development study in mice exposed to mixed-field whole body radiation
  • Responsible for presenting new ideas to understand the mechanism of action of promising Radiation Countermeasure Drugs, develop hypothesis, design, and implements experimental protocols
  • Expect to Perform specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols which will involve specialized procedures such as western blotting, ELISA, molecular analysis of specific RNA transcripts by quantitative RT-PCR, and flow cytometry.
  • Responsible for managing day to day experiments and mentors technical and junior level staffs.
  • Responsible for data analysis using GraphPad prism, write IACUC protocols and amendments.
  • Prepares quarterly and annual reports to sponsors, participates in the teleconference with Sponsors, write manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
  • Provides collaborative assistance to other Research Scientists that require the incumbent's expertise.

Job specifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to analyze and interpret data

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  PhD in a related scientific discipline

Minimum Experience:  2-4 years

Physical Capabilities:  Long periods of standing and sitting; intricate work with hands; carrying of light and moderately heavy laboratory equipment

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: n/a

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  May provide guidance to laboratory staff

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment; may involve working with biohazardous materials; may require working evenings and weekends
