HJF is seeking a Staff Scientist to support the Health Professions Education Program at the Department of Medicine located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USUHS.

Incumbent is responsible for developing and helping to supervise research projects and investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems as pertains to the JPC-1 simulation study and other grant funded research that pertain to the diverse health professions discipline.

Responsibilities:

  1. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols related to JPC-1 simulation-based grant work.
  2. Coordinates with technical and professional staff to execute the JPC-1 and other related simulation grant funded research.
  3. Ensures that JPC -1 requirements and deadlines are delivered on-time, within scope, and within budget.
  4. Devises and executes an outreach and recruitment strategy.
  5. Manages and maintains JPC-1 grant project document and data management procedures.
  6. Processes, analyses, and interprets experimental data.
  7. Trains and supervises technical staff including Research Associate II.
  8. Seeks additional grant funding opportunities related to JPC-1 grant.
  9. Prepares funding documents, written reports, manuscripts for submission to scientific journals, and patent applications.
  10. Maintains a safe work environment with appropriate training of other personnel. 
  11. Provides collaborative assistance to other HPE faculty members who require the incumbent's simulation and, optimally, clinical expertise.
  12. Completes other projects as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of organizational objectives, office automation; ability to work independently; project management skills; ability to use sound judgment in solving problems creatively; ability to coordinate complex tasks and programs; excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills, detail oriented. Shows independence and initiative in implementing departmental policies and processes related to arranging meetings, seminars, and faculty schedules. Ability and willingness to travel 10% to support study implementation at alternative sites.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of simulation laboratory procedures, including working with standardized patients and patient simulators, as well as experience supervising others in the simulation environment. Significant clinical experience as well as experience recruiting subjects for studies involving clinicians. Experience planning, writing and implementing grant proposals with a track record of funding in medical or other health professions education areas is desirable. Experience with database development and data management is desirable.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Doctoral degree (e.g. PhD, DNP, EdD) in a social/behavioral science field or a Masters trained individual with significant expertise in simulation meeting our preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities is required as a minimum, plus experience in an academic environment.

Minimum Experience:  2-6 years of educational research experience, project management experience and simulation experience.

Physical Capabilities:  Long periods of standing and sitting; some lifting of less than 20 pounds may also be required.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  Supervises and trains research assistants.

Work Environment:  Simulation lab environment, office and hospital setting
