HJF is seeking an Epidemiologist to support the Deployment Health Research Center (DHRC), located at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, California. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to DHRC.

The incumbent will provide expert guidance on epidemiologic design and analytic expertise in the conduct of large epidemiologic health studies in the DHRC of the NHRC. Duties will include the planning and implementation of large epidemiologic studies; designing the study methodology; performing statistical analyses of diverse research projects with complex study designs; working with team members to derive an in-depth understanding of the data findings; drafting proposals and writing peer-reviewed publications; exercising independent judgment in the resolution of analytic problems while working in a team environment. Preference will be given to those with experience conducting psychological or behavioral health research or with a strong interest in conducting research in this area.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provides epidemiologic support for study design, implementation, and analyses of research projects.
  2. Develops study plans and proposals for research studies to meet program objectives.
  3. Manages numerous research projects simultaneously and works as a member of a team to conduct scientific research projects.
  4. Performs and helps interpret statistical analyses using SAS including data manipulations, weighing techniques, logistic regression, general linear models with repeated measures, survival analyses, and other statistical techniques for longitudinal and missing data.
  5. Writes reports and scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed professional journals and assists others with writing of reports.
  6. Assists with identifying, obtaining, and managing new data sources to meet program objectives.
  7. Prepares and presents scientific research to the department and at various national and international scientific and military conferences.
  8. Reviews and remains current with technical and scientific literature in epidemiology, biostatistics, and study outcomes of interest.
  9. Assists with developing and designing survey content and questions.
  10. Provides knowledge and insight for new study ideas and long-term goals and objectives.
  11. Supervises work assignments and mentors analysts as directed.
  12. Performs other duties as required.
  13. Reviews and assesses the work of other professionals in own field.
  14. Provides epidemiological and statistical consulting services and direction for the DoD Center.
  15. Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of epidemiology, with good verbal and written skills.
  • Knowledge of disease etiologies and preventive strategies.
  • Advanced knowledge in survey methodology and statistics used to collect and interpret data.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in SAS programming.
  • Skilled in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, email, PowerPoint, and database software.
  • Skilled in multitasking, writing memorandums, correspondence, abstracts, articles and proposals.
  • Ability to create presentations and teach both individuals and groups.
  • Knowledge in grant and proposal writing.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work independently.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize.
  • Team player who can work in a large group including both internal and external investigators.
  • Ability to supervise and direct work assignments.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience performing statistical analysis using data from a longitudinal cohort study and demonstrated subject-matter expertise in the areas of disease epidemiology or health outcomes. Preference will be given to those with a strong background or experience conducting psychological or behavioral health research.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Masters’ degree in Public Health or Epidemiology with 4-6 years of experience in study design. Doctoral level degree in Epidemiology or a doctoral level degree in a related field with demonstrated knowledge and experience within epidemiology and study design/methodology and 0-2 years’ of experience is preferred.


Physical Capabilities:  Walking, standing, must be able to read reports, must be able to hear well enough to communicate with co-workers, must be able to write, type, and use computer and phone systems. Lifting may be required.

Clearance:  If a security clearance is not active upon hire, the candidate must be able to obtain a security clearance for this position.  Candidates will access DoD databases that have classified information.

Work Environment: Normal office working conditions.
