HJF is seeking a Senior Research Associate to support the research efforts of the National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health (NCDMPH) in Rockville, MD (ncdmph.usuhs.edu). The NCDMPH is a Center of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and serves as the nation’s center of excellence in disaster health science, education and training. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the NCDMPH.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a diverse research portfolio, conceptualizing research projects that are well aligned with the current priorities of the disaster health field, federal initiatives/strategies/directives, and the needs of the NCDMPH and its funders. The successful candidate will design and implement research in disaster medicine and public health in collaboration with other staff and stakeholders. Must have experience conducting qualitative and/or quantitative research studies. Disaster health experience strongly preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In-depth knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative research techniques; advanced training and experience in epidemiology and biostatistics; facile with multiple types of statistical analysis software; experience or knowledge of disaster research and training; experience translating research to practice; proven capacity to work independently and complete tasks with minimal direct supervision; works well with a multi-disciplinary team; excellent oral and written communication skills, including writing technical reports and peer-reviewed papers; project or research management experience, excellent judgment and experience effectively managing junior staff.
Desired Kinds of Professional Experience:
1. Research experience in the health and/or public health setting—could include emergency medical services, public health management, emergency management or an academic setting.
2. Strong experience in epidemiological and bio statistical research methods and software programs.
3. Proven ability to interact well face-to-face and with small groups.
4. Comfortable convening and facilitating meetings and groups.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master’s degree required, doctoral degree preferred (e.g., PhD or DrPH).
Minimum Experience: A master’s degree with 2-4 years of experience or a doctoral degree with 1-2 years of research experience.
Physical Capabilities: Long periods of sitting, standing and walking while collecting data in the field.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: May supervise research staff.
Work Environment: Office environment. 10-15% travel, primarily domestic.
Other: Must be a US Citizen; eligible to obtain a Secret security clearance.
