HJF is seeking a Research Assistant to support the Regenerative Medicine Department located at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific and program support services to NMRC.

The Research Assistant II will work under the direct supervision of a principal investigator and/or lead investigator in the Regenerative Medicine Department of the Operational and Undersea Medicine Directorate, NMRC. 

The incumbent will assist in animal based, pre-clinical scientific research. The incumbent will perform both basic and complex laboratory tests that will include flow cytometry analysis, PCR based gene expression assays, ELISA, and cell culture. The incumbent will also assist in surgical procedures and the day-to-day post-surgical animal care management/treatment related to small animal and large animal research protocols within the department. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining veterinarian and research records, and manage the daily health observations and treatments of all research animals.  The incumbent will assist with all aspects (planning, organizing, directing and implementation) of the research and/or development in collaboration with others, working to achieve the research mission.  The incumbent will act as a technical advisor to staff members to insure that the team meets schedules, adhere to performance requirements, maintains conformance with specific operational standards (SOW) and protocols and/or resolve technical problems appropriately. The Research Assistant II is expected to read and understand the scientific literature, assist with planning experiments, assist with analyzing data and make presentations to others about the work. Supervision will be provided by the Principal investigator and/or designated Lead Investigator(s); however, the employee is expected to exercise a high level of   independence and initiative in the management of laboratory research within established guidelines.  This position may require working evenings and weekends depending on the workload of the laboratory.

Essential Job Duties (90% of time): 

  • Performs laboratory testing experiments utilizing standard and molecular biology based techniques and equipment to include mammalian cell culturing, mRNA expression arrays (RT-PCR), flow cytometry analysis, protein expression assays (ELISA and/or Luminex technologies), and cell culture.
  • Assists in managing the logistical operation of departmental and interdepartmental small and large animal studies to include but not limited to preparation of the operating room, procurement and preparation of all medication and compounds, and ordering of supplies.
  • Carries out animal based experimental research to include pre- and post-operative care, administration of medications/test agents, serum and tissue collections, necropsy, euthanasia, and post-mortem tissue collections in accordance with IACUC-approved protocols and the Guide for the Care and Use of Experimental Animals.
  • Maintains detailed laboratory and animal records for projects involving animal utilization, work with Investigators to format/archive records, data and results into searchable electronic formats.
  • Collects, records, organizes, stores, analyzes, and summarizes research data. Reports experiment results using a variety of scientific, word processing, spreadsheet or statistical software applications or program platforms.
  • Monitor the clinical progression of animals during experiments. Administer medications/drugs; assist with or perform treatments; conduct bandage/dressing changes; collect blood samples and run lab tests.
  • Promotes effective collaborative working relationships with other employees across multiple disciplines and departments.
  • Assists in the design of laboratory experiments, techniques and protocols.
  • Role in projects may include demonstrating or training staff members in specialized laboratory techniques and teaching specific methods or procedures.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day functional operation of the laboratory to ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness; identifies equipment and supply needs; prepares and submits purchase requisitions for approval.
  • The incumbent will support the Navy’s Occupational Safety and Health Programs and work in accordance with established safety practices as outlined in NAVOSHINST 5100.23B.

Other Job Duties: (10% of time):

  • The incumbent will present data at laboratory meetings and other informal venues.
  • Performs other related duties to the work described herein.

Job Specification:

  • Familiarity with cellular and molecular biology based techniques including flow cytometry, PCR, ELISA, and/or cell culture based assays
  • Care and handling of small animals (mice/rats), pigs and non-human primates
  • Displays ability to assist with all surgical procedures and perform minor rodent surgical procedures.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team-oriented/goal oriented environment.
  • Ability to train, supervise and evaluate technical/laboratory staff in proper work methods and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and prepare complete and concise reports.
  • May require work on nights and weekends

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: 0-2 years of laboratory experience required. Must have knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; ability to follow detailed instructions; good oral/written communication and analytical skills. The incumbent must demonstrate prior work experience in animal care.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline is required.

Physical Capabilities:  The incumbent may be required to stand, sit or bend from a standing position for long periods of time.  Also the incumbent may be handling various chemicals and potentially infectious bloodborne pathogens.

Work Environment:  Animal Facility and Laboratory Environment

Background: Ability to obtain and hold a Public Trust clearance to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC).
