HJF is seeking a Research Assistant II to support the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Therapeutics at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USU. The Research Associate is responsible for conducting research in cooperation with Dr. Regina M. Day and other members of her laboratory on lung and bone marrow injury and molecular mechanisms radiation toxicity and radiation countermeasure mechanisms. The incumbent will participate in experimental design, personnel training, and overall function of the laboratory. The incumbent performs specialized bio-laboratory research using protocols that involve specialized procedures related to animal models of pulmonary and radiation injury and cell culture models of radiation toxicity.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Major responsibilities include related to lung and bone marrow injury and radiation toxicity research in animal models and in cell culture.
  • The incumbent conduct animal irradiation with treatments for the testing of radiation countermeasures.
  • He/she will be responsible for keeping a detailed logbook of all experiments.
  • He/she will be responsible for participating in animal and cell culture research.
  • The incumbent will analyze DNA damage, cellular apoptosis and senescence, and gene and protein expression in cells or animal tissues exposed to radiation, and determine the efficacy of radiation countermeasures.
  • The incumbent will use such techniques as qRT-PCR, DNA cloning, gene expression, mammalian cell culture and transfection, the generation of fusion proteins in bacteria, western blotting, enzyme assays, immunohistochemistry, and a number of other biochemical assays.
  • The incumbent will also participate in the development of new methods and techniques to enhance the reliability of research results or to accommodate experimental conditions.
  • The incumbent is generally involved in highly specialized assignments requiring the performance of complex laboratory tests.
  • He/she operates and maintains complex instrumentation and equipment needed for the analyses preformed.  
  • He/she performs experiments with animal models and cell culture systems, calculates various formulas and concentrations of drugs and chemicals used in various experiments.
  • He/she analyzes and prepares data for presentation at laboratory group meeting, scientific meetings, and for publications in appropriate journals.
  • Assists in the teaching of students the techniques used in the research in which the incumbent is involved, and advises members of the technical staff of this particular research.
  • The incumbent maintains detailed and organized records of experimental procedures and observations for the various studies.
  • Serves as a member of a research team and collaborates in execution of experimental procedures, conducts literature searches, assists in planning research protocols, and in preparing reports of investigations for IACUC reports and for publication.
  • The incumbent performs many of the duties of this position with minimal supervision.
  • Other responsibilities: Maintains and acquires reagents and expendable materials for operation of the laboratory. Maintains preventive measures in the laboratory, ensuring the cleanliness of the laboratory space used and the proper preventive maintenance, calibration, operation, and quality control of laboratory equipment.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Applicants are expected to have previous experience in routine areas of modern molecular biology including cloning, cell culture and transfection, DNA sequencing, protein purification, and some experience in animal handling. Experience with use of personal computers for manuscript preparation and data analysis is essential.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline. An advanced degree (M.D. or Ph.D.) in an area of biological sciences is preferred for this position.

Minimum Experience:  2-4 years of directly related research experience. The incumbent would ideally have more than five years of training or equivalent research skill, subject knowledge, and expertise and experience as reflected by publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals as appropriate to his/her research

Supervisory Controls: The incumbent works under the general direction of Dr. Regina M. Day, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Therapeutics, who evaluates the incumbent's performance, and is responsible to Dr. Regina M. Day, the principal investigator of the assigned research project(s).
