 HJF is seeking a Histology Technician responsible for providing histology, laboratory and research support to the Clinical Breast Care Project within the Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland.

Responsibilities:

  1. Processes research blood samples (serum, plasma, RNA) in support of all protocols within the project
  2. Assists pathologist and/or pathologists’ assistant in the procurement and archiving of breast and lymph node tissue samples
  3. Researches and documents pertinent clinical history for consented patients
  4. Monitors OR, Breast Clinic and Imaging schedules to track patient enrollment
  5. Maintains organization of research materials, including files, slides and tissue blocks.
  6. Ensures accurate specimen entry into the database, tracks all specimens, and resolves discrepancies as needed
  7. Prepares tissue for microscopic examination which includes slide labeling, microtomy, staining
  8. Prepares and ships frozen specimens to an offsite storage facility
  9. Maintains accurate records; tabulates, and organizes data
  10. Assists with data collection as needed
  11. Attend meetings with the Breast Center and Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) staff to resolve problems, make recommendations and maintain close and positive working relationships
  12. Sees that equipment is in good working order or is repaired as needed and supplies are reordered as necessary.
  13. Maintain records and perform light administrative duties as assigned
  14. Assist with special projects as assigned
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of histologic technique; knowledge of anatomic pathology, breast cancer or related scientific discipline; knowledge of and skill in handling biological hazards and their safe use and disposal.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word preferred.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Associate’s degree or equivalent credits in related scientific field

Minimum Experience:  1-2 years in histologic technique to include, proper orientation and embedding of breast tissues, skill and proficiency in performing all aspects of microtomy and slide preparation for routine H&E and special histology stains.

Physical Capabilities:  Handles variety of chemicals; requires long periods of standing.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration:  Certification in Histologic Technique through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (HT, ASCP), or equivalent.  Must complete CITI training.

Work Environment:  Military Hospital laboratory and office/clinic

Background Requirement: Must be a US Citizen and able to pass a favorable National Agency Check and obtain Secret clearance.
