HJF is seeking a Clinical Research Microbiologist to support the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP) in Bethesda, Maryland. Performs routine and specialized tests and procedures in the field of clinical microbiology for studies of nosocomial infections, skin and soft tissue infections, microbial colonization and pathogenesis, and anti-microbial resistance. Handles clinical specimens for the isolation, identification and drug susceptibility testing of bacterial and fungal pathogens. Manages and supervises a team of microbiology technicians. Coordinates microbiological sub-studies of clinical research protocols to evaluate pathogenesis of infectious disease and mechanisms of anti-microbial resistance.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of human biology and medical microbiology; proficiency with molecular methods in clinical research (e.g. pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, PCR, sequencing, etc.); prior supervisory experience, as well as attention to detail and excellent skills in written and verbal communication; knowledge and proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint; prior experience in the collection and management of clinical microbiology data in electronic databases.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Microbiology or related field required. MT(ASCP) Certification or degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is a plus.
Minimum Experience: 4-6 years of relevant experience preferably in a clinical microbiology setting
Physical Capabilities: Ability to spend long periods of time at a lab bench. Light lifting and moving of equipment, slides, and chemical reagents may be required.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Management and supervision of a small team of microbiology technicians on clinical research protocols.
Work Environment: Works primarily in a laboratory. Handles biological materials and lab equipment. Exposure to blood borne pathogens, chemical fumes, and other hazardous agents.
Background: Candidate must be eligible to receive a Common Access Card (CAC) and pass a background.
