HJF is seeking a Research Assistant II to support the Molecular Bioeffects Branch at the Air Force Research Laboratory, 711th Human performance Wing in Wright Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), Dayton, Ohio. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to  WPAFB.

Applicant will be responsible for planning, conducting, and completing investigations under the supervision of the Scientific Director. Also, the candidate will provide laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff, including in-depth characterization of nanomaterials in cellular systems for understanding biological interactions of nanomaterials for pre, during, and post exposure stages. Applicant must have an understanding of cellular and molecular biology techniques, nanomaterial synthesis, characterization, and exposures, inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), flow cytometry, and basic MATLAB techniques. The applicant will also take on lab management responsibilities including, but not limited to, maintaining an appropriate lab environment, handling laboratory samples, troubleshooting and maintaining laboratory equipment, analyzing data using applicable software, equipment and supply purchasing, assisting in the writing of manuscripts for publications, preparing data for in-house presentations, and presenting findings at scientific meetings. Other responsibilities might include assisting and training technicians and researchers in equipment procedures and laboratory protocols. Applicant must be a United States citizen.


  • Assists in experimental hypothesis and design.
  • Performs laboratory research projects, including collection and organization of data.  Makes detailed observations about experiments.
  • Active apprehension of necessary new technologies and protocols.
  • Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
  • Assist in preparation of funding documents, written reports, manuscripts for submission to scientific journals, and patent applications.
  • Supervises lab maintenance procedures.
  • Coordinates with other technical and professional staff.

Non essential responsibilities:                                                               

  • Maintains a safe work environment with appropriate training of other personnel. 
  • Provides collaborative assistance to other Research Scientists that require the incumbent's technical experience.
  • Completes other projects as needed.

Job Specifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; ability to follow detailed instructions; good communication and analytical skills; possess excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work independently as well as part of an interdisciplinary team; experience in laboratory management including government purchase order requests, budgeting, and lab maintenance procedures; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently and work with others. Desirable Skills: analytical chemistry experience; peer-reviewed publications; experience in toxicology.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry

Minimum Experience:  2 to 4 years research and laboratory management experience

Physical Capabilities:  Work involves long periods of standing and handling of numerous chemicals

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  Supervises lab and equipment maintenance and protocols

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment; may require working evenings and weekends; may involve working with biohazardous materials
