HJF is seeking a Neuropathologist to support the Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM) and Department of Pathology at the Uniformed Services University in Rockville, Maryland.  Incumbent is responsible for providing neuropathological analysis and expertise for research projects in the laboratory of Dr. Daniel Perl.


  1. Performs neuropathology diagnostic evaluation of assigned Brain Repository cases and generates a proper neuropathologic diagnostic report.
  2. Formulates experimental hypotheses; designs and implements experimental neuropathology protocols, with special emphasis on traumatic brain injury and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
  3. Develops necessary new technologies and protocols to advance the neuropathology research in Dr. Perl’s lab.
  4. Collects, processes and interprets experimental data, including post-mortem human brain tissue.
  5. Trains technical staff and junior level staff scientists.
  6. Provides collaborative assistance to other Research Scientists that require the incumbent's expertise.
  7. Maintains a safe work environment with appropriate training of other personnel. 
  8. Completes other projects as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Expertise in clinical neuropathology required; bright field microscopy, expert knowledge of histological stains and complex staining methods; detailed knowledge of immunohistochemical techniques; knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques; knowledge of biological processes and ability to integrate this knowledge with histopathology expertise; excellent communication skills; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Must be board certified in Neuropathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  MD degree with a license in practice in a US jurisdiction.

Minimum Experience:  6 or more years of clinical diagnostic neuropathology and research experience

Physical Capabilities:  work involves long periods of standing and handling of numerous chemicals

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  supervises technical and research support staff

Work Environment:  laboratory and clinical environment; may require working evenings and weekends; may involve working with biohazardous materials
