Performs routine and non-routine laboratory procedures for the department to enhance laboratory efficiency.  Independently works on assigned projects with no supervision and serves as the main trainer for new employees during training, troubleshooting, and analysis of data.


  1. Uses independent judgment to perform basic to advance molecular techniques.
  2. Trains new lab personnel and oversees the overall training process and schedule.
  3. In the absence of a supervisor, oversees daily activities of laboratory procedures, results, technicians and safety in the lab.
  4. Maintains policies and procedures for CAP accreditation.
  5. Assists supervisor in setting up new test procedures and equipment.
  6. Performs computer data entry of lab results and other lab information.
  7. Performs assay procedures and data analysis related to sequencing.
  8. Trains or assists in training of personnel for onsite assays and platforms.
  9. Maintains maintenance on the sequencer and all sequencing related instruments.
  10. Contributes to the team effort by ensuring that essential duties are completed in a timely manner.
  11. Updates SOPs and forms when needed.
  12. Monitors, tracks and assist in ordering lab supplies.
  13. Maintains organization and housekeeping of the laboratory.
  14. Trains offsite personnel on different assays and platforms when needed.
  15. Creates and presents abstracts and papers at scientific conferences.
  16. Attends offsite training for new assays and platforms.
  17. Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

  1. Advanced knowledge of molecular, basic laboratory, and safety procedures.
  2. Advanced knowledge of standard laboratory equipment.
  3. Skill in use of word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, email, and database software.
  4. Skill in use of pipettes, microscopes, staining procedures.
  5. Skill is use of aseptic techniques.
  6. Ability to be trained of proper throat, urine, and blood collection techniques.
  7. Ability to plan and prioritize work.
  8. Ability to distinguish colors.
  9. Ability to do long periods of repetitive work.
  10. Ability to correctly transcribe laboratory results.
  11. Ability to follow standard operating procedures.
  12. Ability to be a self-starter and have the ability to work independently.
  13. Ability to interface with investigators, vendors, research staff, and study participants.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  This position requires the equivalent of a Bachelor’s level college degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or Medical Technology or related field with at least 4 years related experience.

Physical Capabilities:  Must be able to walk, stand, sit for long periods of time, and hear well enough to communicate with coworkers, read reports, have normal color vision, be dexterous and possess exceptional hand-eye coordination.  Candidate may be required to wear a face mask while interacting with patients and/or specimens and must be able to pass a respirator fit test.  In order for the face mask to effectively protect the user, facial hair must be clean shaven.  Candidate is required to pass annual screening for Tuberculosis.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  Ability to supervise laboratory procedures and staff in the absence of the supervisor.

Security Clearance It is a condition of employment with the Naval Health Research Center that you undergo a favorable National Agency Check with Local Agency and Credit Checks (NACLC) investigation which will include being fingerprinted.  If a favorable NACLC is not received, your employment with the Foundation would terminate.

Work Environment:  Clinical laboratory working conditions. Handles hazardous waste materials. Possible exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens.  Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases.  Must comply with applicable safety procedures.
