HJF is seeking a Licensed Vocational Nurse to support the Genetic and Immunologic Predictors of Adverse Effects Following Immunization at the Regional Vaccine Safety Hub located in Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center. Responsibilities include providing routine quality nursing services for a clinical research project and to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment through identifying, correcting, and reporting health and safety hazards.


  1. Provides routine nursing services according to patient needs as directed by staff nurse and/or physician and in accordance with established research protocols.
  2. Provides a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees through identifying, correcting, and reporting health and safety hazards.
  3. In accordance with research protocol, interviews the patients to collect data on health history and lifestyle practices
  4. Educates patients on a research protocol.
  5. Maintains a therapeutic environment and notifies the appropriate staff nurse and physicians of changes in assessment when appropriate.
  6. Administers appropriate pharmaceuticals and treatments to patients, as necessary.
  7. Obtains body fluid specimens, as necessary.
  8. Under supervision of staff nurse, records, collects, organizes, catalogs, disseminates, and maintains appropriate files of current patient data, maintaining clinical records.
  9. Demonstrates skill in interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and co-workers.
  10. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication methods using lines of authority appropriately.
  11. Demonstrates accountability for nursing practice through planned and continuous professional growth and development.
  12. Demonstrates a commitment to the healthcare organization by taking responsibility for job function.
  13. Demonstrates the knowledge and judgment needed to meet the nursing needs of the patient.
  14. Performs other duties as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of procedures and techniques necessary for performing clinical and research tasks; ability to learn and become proficient in data acquisition and clinical responsibilities related to research protocols; excellent interpersonal skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Associate’s degree or completion of Licensed Practical Nurse Program.

Minimum Experience: 2-4 years nursing experience; clinical trial experience preferred.

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of sitting, standing, escorting research subjects, carrying light items; frequent lifting, stretching and other physical exertion during positioning of patients and moving equipment; may encounter patients who are confused, agitated, or abusive.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse, certified in basic cardiac life support (BCLS) and other required HJF and Facility Training

Work Environment: Office, hospital and/or clinical patient care area; possible evening and/or weekend hours. Exposed to patients’ conditions and some unpleasant sights, smells, and contagious diseases.
