The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is looking for a Research Engineer III to support research and program objectives at the Naval Medical Research Unit ‐ San Antonio (NAMRU‐SA). HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to NAMRU-SA at Fort Sam Houston, TX.


  • Provide support of research with the purpose to engage in professional biomedical engineering functions involving medical research practices to support the laboratory’s efforts, including:
  • Utilize demonstrative knowledge of biomedical engineering principles, practices, and techniques;
  • Coordinate all design phases with managers, other engineers, and technical support personnel;
  • Direct the integration, fabrication, and functional testing of systems after installation to insure that performance meets specifications and client requirements;
  • Resolve novel systems and design engineering problems which require the development of new techniques or the innovative application of new state‐ofthe‐art technology;
  • Develop methods, standards, and procedures to be followed by other engineers and technicians in executing major design and development projects;
  • Test and evaluate efforts involving communications, computer command and control systems, data collection, and instrumentation systems.; Systems are typically composed of numerous and diverse interdependent subsystems and units derived from the development, design, or integration of new interconnections and measurement control devices; and
  • Serve as an advisor to research scientists and as a resource person for other team members. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

  • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to clearly convey scientific information and data to peers and flag level officers.  A known intellect and expert in their field of expertise and highly sought after as a presenter and lecturer at professional conferences and symposiums.
  • Experience presenting and writing peer‐reviewed scientific articles.  Knowledge of preparation and presentation of scientific articles including formatting, writing, and graphic presentations. Experience in using electronic/computer media for presentations and/or briefs. Ability to utilize microcomputers, Internet, online literature searches, and web software and procedures.  Ability to produce ready‐to‐publish articles with review for scientific content only.
  • Experience serving as team leader.  Ability to assume responsibility for and have knowledge of all phases of the research process, including problem definition, planning, budget formulation execution, and analysis, interpretation, and reporting of findings.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:

  • Possess Masters Degree with 3 years of experience.  Masters degree must be in one of the following fields of higher education: Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related fields.
