The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is looking for a Laboratory Manager to support research and program objectives at the Naval Medical Research Unit ‐ San Antonio (NAMRU‐SA). HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to NAMRU-SA.


  1. Coordinating animal research work activities between Research Scientist, animal care staff, and research laboratory technicians.
  2. Provide research related recommendations and support to principle investigators. 
  3. Oversee day‐to‐day laboratory operations pertaining to sample analyses and equipment maintenance.
  4. Train technicians to use equipment and properly maintain training files.
  5. Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and calibrated. 
  6. Provide recommended changes to protocols and standard operating procedures to include Good Laboratory Practices. 
  7. Provide additional functions incidental to research activities.
  8. Coordinate animal research work activities between Research Scientist, animal care staff, and research laboratory technicians and ensure there is adequate equipment to support all projects.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to support the implementation of laboratory based research studies, including utilized of state‐of‐the art methodologies in immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology; Ability to collect data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; or through other means for research projects; Ability to organize and maintain the databases; Must have knowledge of in vitro and in vivo model systems; Must have knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets and proper storage of chemicals and reagents; Must have knowledge of computer software, including the Microsoft Office Suite and graphing software; Provide research management support and assistance to the Principal Investigator(s) assigned; Facilitates information flow between program members, Program Scientific Directors, and the contractor; Provides oversight to budgets, accounting, and purchasing and facilitates payment of invoices/purchase orders; Orients, trains and educates all contractor staff; As needed, supervises lower level contractor program members.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Physiology, Neurophysiology, Neuroscience, Immunology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related fields.

Minimum Experience:  2 to 4 years experience.
