HJF is seeking a Research Staff Scientist II to support the Naval Medical Research Unit – San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio, TX.  NAMRU-SA is a major research center conducting medical and directed energy biomedical research, which focuses on ways to enhance the safety, health, performance and operational readiness of Navy and Marine Corps personnel and addresses their emergent medical problems in routine and combat operations. Incumbent is responsible for developing and supervising research projects and investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems.  Responsible for providing support in research projects aimed at evaluating the innate immune response associated with hemorrhagic shock and poly-trauma, including establishing in vivo and in vitro model systems, data acquisition, and data analysis.


  1. Develop and conduct protocol-driven scientific research addressing various aspects of military medicine, including but not limited to:  hemorrhage and resuscitation, immunomodulation, directed energy bioeffects, and bioassay development.
  2. Provide support for writing protocol-driven research proposals, animal use protocols, human use protocols, technical reports, final reports, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  3. Evaluate date sets (provided by the government and collected by the contractor).
  4. Develop presentation materials, Standard Operating Procedures, and present findings at technical and professional meetings. Experience using electronic/computer medical for presentations and/or briefs. Ability to use microcomputers, internet, online internet searches, and web software and procedures. Ability to produce ready-to-publish articles with review for scientific content only.
  5. Prepare experimental subjects, set-up experimental equipment, and aid in training and developing experimental subjects for experimental procedures in accordance with approved animal or human use protocols.
  6. Provide support in development of establishment of in vivo and in vitro model systems, data acquisition and data analysis.
  7. Serve as technical or peer advisor to more junior scientists and as an advisor resource contact for other team members.
  8. Maintains a safe work environment with appropriate training of other personnel.
  9. Completes other projects as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Degree must be in one of the following disciplines: Environmental Health Sciences (Chemistry, Occupational Epidemiology, Pharmacology, or Toxicology), Physiology, Neurophysiology, Neuroscience, Immunology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related fields. Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to clearly convey scientific information and data to peers and flag level officers. A known intellect and expert in field of expertise and highly sought after as a presenter and lecturer at professional conferences and symposiums. Experience serving as a Principal Investigator or team leader. Ability to assume responsibility for and have knowledge of all phases of the research process, including problem definition, planning, budget formulation, execution and analysis, interpretation and reporting of findings.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  PhD in related scientific discipline (Master’s Degree with additional experience may be considered).

Minimum Experience:  4 to 6 years related research experience. Must have worked as an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor at the university level or as in Industry Scientist.

Physical Capabilities:  work involves long periods of standing

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  supervises technical support staff

Work Environment:  laboratory environment; may require working evenings and weekends; may involve working with human and animal subjects
