HJF is seeking a Staff Scientist to support the infectious disease research programs within the Division of Tropical Public Health at the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to USU. The incumbent is responsible for developing and supervising research projects and investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques; excellent communication skills; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently and supervise others. Specific knowledge in molecular epidemiology and tropical infectious protozoal diseases, with skills in molecular biology (both DNA and RNA work), vaccine immunology, assay development, flow cytometry, and parasite and vector culture, including insectary setup experience, vector dissection and aseptic tissue culture. Experience with protocol development and animal models desirable. Prior demonstrable experience with demonstrable experience with data collection, organizing, analyzing and summarizing for detailed reports and research papers and data presentation. Experience with quality control, quality assurance and documentation desirable. Successful experience in mentoring and training technicians, post-baccalaureate and undergraduate students.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: PhD in related scientific discipline
Minimum Experience: 2 to 4 years related research experience
Physical Capabilities: Work involves long periods of standing and handling of numerous chemicals
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Supervises technical support staff
Work Environment: Laboratory environment; may require working evenings and weekends; may involve working with biohazardous materials
