HJF is seeking a Research Assistant to support the Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics (PMB) located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland.  HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USUHS.  Responsible for malaria laboratory research projects.  Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff.


  1. Performs malaria laboratory research projects, including collection and organization of data.  Makes detailed observations about experiments.
  2. Maintains supplies in the laboratory, performs equipment maintenance, assists with ordering supplies, and other general laboratory duties including organization and inventory.
  3. Assists in the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
  4. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
  5. Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases.
  6. Primary responsibility for lab organization, ordering of supplies, and maintenance tasks such as freezer and frig upkeep. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; experience in molecular biology techniques, including pipetting, making buffers and solutions, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis, and nucleic acid extraction; ability to follow detailed instructions; good communication and analytical skills. Critical qualities are attention to detail and good team membership skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline

Minimum Experience: 0 to 2 years laboratory experience

Physical Capabilities: long periods of standing and sitting; handling various chemicals

Work Environment: laboratory environment
