HJF is seeking an on-site ELearning Design Media Specialist to support the Office of the Vice President for Information & Education Technology/CIO, Education & Technology Innovation (ETI) Support Office located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USU. The mission of USU is to provide the highest quality education programs in the health sciences to those selected individuals who demonstrate dedication to a career in the health professions in the Uniformed Services. The USU is authorized to grant appropriate advanced academic degrees and has established postdoctoral, postgraduate, and technological institutes. Programs in continuing education for military members of the health professions have been established so that the highest standards of health care may be maintained within the military medical departments. The USU must be responsible to the overall educational needs of the Military Departments relating specifically to the preparation of individuals for careers in the health professions. The USU is developing programs designed to recruit and retain superior health science professionals as faculty and researcher, and to ensure maximum utilization of the health science labor force, facilities, and equipment available within military medical departments worldwide.

PURPOSE OF POSITION: The candidate will serve as the Learning Engineer/Media Specialist supporting projects including the design, development, pilot delivery, delivery and evaluation of courses and instructional packages. The candidate will provide creative professional support, help build bridges between fields of education and develop additional infrastructure to support teaching and learning. They will also create multimedia projects as well as provide support of educational tasks. The candidate will report to the Director of the ETI.

Organization: ETI, Vice President for Information and Education Technology/CIO

Major Duties:

  1. The candidate will have a proven record of designing and developing face-to-face as well as Web-based/distributed educational products and materials from needs analysis and development of instructional objectives to designing instruction to the final evaluation of course or courseware. The candidate will work in an integrated team environment with other instructional designers, graphic designers and programmers to develop effective course content and learning activities.
  2. The candidate must show a strong history of working with university faculty to enhance both face to face instruction and distributed learning (DL). Excellent organizational, planning, writing, project management and communications skills are essential.
  3. The candidate will support the development of multimedia to groups and appropriate instructional designers as directed; participate in and plan workshops for faculty along with other specialized training on multimedia, general graphics, video and multimedia.
  4. The candidate will integrate their knowledge of the health sciences (medical), technology and education disciplines to support, teaching, learning and product development.
  5. Other duties as assigned.

Task Examples:

  • Support and collaborate with university faculty or educators to enhance their instruction at the lesson, course and curriculum level.
  • Develop requirements for designing and developing face to face and DL educational animations, graphics, medical illustrations and other multimedia content and then developing those requirements into final products or recommendations as directed by leadership.
  • Work with other degreed multimedia specialists, certified medical illustrators, and artists to develop and help deliver advanced, highly interactive-highly engaging, and "Web 2.0" technology enhanced, face to face as well as online courses and/or learning modules.
  • Design multimedia with appropriate attention given to and recommendations provided to content owners on interface design, use of multimedia, and design integration of materials and activities. Ensure that faculty and staff are educated in the appropriate standards in relation to 508 regulations, multimedia design techniques and sound artistic practices for the web or face to face presentation.
  • Organize instructional content for both face to face instruction and DL.
  • Use best practices in the field to design and implement innovative projects (e.g., interactive media) that leverage the power of the Internet and other instructional technologies effectively to improve teaching and learning.
  • Work with a development team to ensure instructional materials are developed according to the approved design.
  • Provide expertise in health sciences (medical) related topics.
  • Create documentation (e.g., user guides, process guides, storyboards etc.) based on design principles.
  • Complete evaluation and assessment on courseware and other educational products.
  • Provide training on Sakai, the instructional design process, multimedia process or other typical training requirements.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  MS degree in educational technology, instructional design, educational psychology, adult education, higher education, or related field required.
