HJF is seeking an International Program Scientist to support the Austere environments Consortium for Enhanced Sepsis Outcomes (ACESO) located at the Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD), in Ft. Detrick, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to ACESO.
ACESO is an international team of investigators headquartered at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) and comprised of DoD, non-profit, and academic partners. ACESO is dedicated to improving survival of patients with severe infections in resource-constrained environments. Founded in 2013, ACESO implements a coordinated program of research aimed at improving prevention, early recognition, diagnosis, and effective treatment of sepsis from all causes in austere environments. Particular attention focuses on infections that currently have no specific therapies or present unique risks to the US military or global health security.
The International Program Scientist will support ACESO at the BDRD in Ft. Detrick, MD. The candidate will be responsible for supporting and developing laboratory capacity in support of clinical research projects across program sites, predominantly in West Africa but potentially including Cambodia, Uganda, Ghana, Liberia and future sites. The candidate will also be responsible for leading our efforts for pathogen identification.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques; excellent communication skills; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently and supervise others. Knowledge of diagnostic approaches for infectious disease is required.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: PhD in related scientific discipline
Minimum Experience: 2-4 years of related research experience.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Supervises technical support staff
Physical Capabilities: Work involves long periods of standing and handling of numerous chemicals
Work Environment: Laboratory environment; may require working evenings and weekends; may involve working with biohazardous materials
Travel and location: Position may require up to 30% travel to ACESO international laboratories and scientific conferences. This position is primarily based out of Fort Detrick, however, there may be flexibility with a few days out of the Bethesda (Rockledge) office.
Other: US Citizenship required; ability to obtain Secret Clearance
