HJF is seeking a Research Assistant II located in the Military Performance Laboratory (MPL) within the Center for the Intrepid (CFI)/Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to BAMC.
The aim of the CFI is to provide state-of-the-art care for wounded service members as they return to the highest levels of physical, psychological and emotional function. The MPL provides injured military members with the best technology available to precisely analyze and interpret movement dysfunctions. Personnel from the MPL provide clinical gait analysis services, conduct research to improve patient management, and provide education and training in leading-edge care and rehabilitation. This is a full-time position in direct support of research protocols involving assessment and training of individuals who have experienced limb trauma. The incumbent will assist with all activities related to data collection, processing and management within the CFI MPL.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Working knowledge of biomechanics and familiarity with the function of gait laboratories and research protocols is desirable. Interpersonal skills to work effectively with patients and staff. Ability to learn new software quickly, troubleshoot computer related issues, and provide a high attention to detail. Knowledge of Matlab, Vicon Nexus, Cortex, and Visual 3D is highly desirable.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Biomedical/Biomechanical Engineering, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or related field from an accredited institution.
Minimum Experience: 2-4 years related experience.
Physical Capabilities: Work involves periods of prolonged sitting and limited lifting of objects up to 25 lbs.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: The Incumbent works under the supervision of the local Henry Jackson Foundation supervisor and under the direction of the director of the Military Performance Lab to achieve contracted objectives. Technical and procedural problems and plans relating to accomplishment of assigned tasks are resolved independently or through consultation with MPL or CFI personnel.
Work Environment: The work environment is that of clinical motion analysis laboratory located in a teaching and research hospital. Work is performed in an office setting with adequate lighting, heat and air conditioning.
Guidelines: A variety of oral and written guidelines and instructions are used in carrying out the duties of this position. The incumbent is trained to independently interpret procedures and guidelines and adapt to a variety of assigned tasks where guidelines are not specific or are nonexistent. Independent judgment is required in determining specific procedures to be followed, sources to be used and technical compliance with standards and requirements.
Complexity: The work involves a considerable amount of variety and complexity of data, information, resources, regulations, sources and technical requirements. There are a variety of actions that may be required and taken depending upon the type of data collection being performed. Data entry and manipulation may be complex and may require deduction of relationships between many differing factors and independent initiative in pursuing those many differing factors and relationships.
Scope and Effect: The function of this position is to provide essential support to clinical and research assessment conducted in the Military Performance Lab. The accurate collection, analysis and reporting of motion analysis or other physical performance assessment results is imperative to successful completion of research projects.
Personal Contacts: Contacts are with coworkers within or affiliated with the CFI or BAMC, and patients and subjects undergoing assessment in the MPL.
Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are for the purpose of obtaining and providing information and service relative to operation of the Military Performance Laboratory
Physical Demands: The physical activity is mostly sedentary but may require some lifting of equipment and sitting and standing from the floor for patient set up.
