HJF is seeking an Athletic Trainer to assist the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, CT.  HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USCGA. The USCGA is a designated performance site within the NCAA-DoD Grand Alliance: Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium.  The CARE Consortium’s goal is to better understand the natural history and return to play criteria of NCAA.  In addition, the USCGA, along with the other U.S. Service Academies, will extend recruitment to all cadets at the academy, including those who sustain concussion for sports, training accidents, or other trauma.  Responsibilities are to assist with collection of clinical data associated with specific projects and to ensure that all necessary steps including safety and following regulations are being taken.


  1. Adheres to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Good Clinical Practices (GCP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), infection control procedures and rules and regulations pertaining to the research site
  2. Assist with self-reporting baseline assessment measures
  3. Assist with administrative logistics including consenting research participants, data collection, and scheduling
  4. Executes, maintains research study to include data collection
  5. Prepares research subjects for research study
  6. Manages study documentation to include accurate and timely filing
  7. Complies with all the rules and regulations as applicable to assigned duty station
  8. Documents all correspondence and communication pertinent to the research
  9. Interacts and communicates effectively with study and site personnel, research participants, HJF and the study sponsor
  10. Promotes safety and confidentiality of research participants at all times
  11. Creates and adheres to a data quality and quality assurance plan
  12. Assists with the initial coding and data entry of structured questionnaires and data collection tools, when applicable
  13. Demonstrates proficiency in performing basic study related procedures as required
  14. Schedules and attends regular team meetings
  15. Possesses a working knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as applicable
  16. Remains accessible and accountable at all times during work hours and collects messages at least twice daily
  17. Returns telephone messages within 24 hours of receipt; return email messages in a timely manner as appropriate
  18. Complies with the dress code of HJF and assigned duty station
  19. Promotes positive, professional relationships with co-workers and HJF
  20. Provides other assistance to clinical sites as needed.


  1. Certified Athletic Trainer or similar background and experience preferred
  2. Experience conducting concussion assessment tests using Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) SCAT3, SAC, Impact, etc. strongly preferred.
  3. Demonstrate competence in oral and written communication
  4. Must be organized, attentive to detail, and possess a positive, friendly and professional demeanor
  5. Must be flexible with changing priorities and able to communicate in a diplomatic and professional manner
  6. Computer skills including at least intermediate level experience with Excel and other Microsoft Office Software
  7. Familiarity with medical terminology, medications, laboratory tests, and abbreviations commonly used in patient medical charts

Minimum Experience: 6 months to 1 year of clinical trial experience

Physical Capabilities: long periods of standing and sitting

Work Environment: clinical and field environment in a Military Academy working in both a medical and athletic setting.
