The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF) is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate for the Department of Pharmacology & Molecular Therapeutics and the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI), located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland. USUHS is the federal military medical university in the suburbs of Washington DC.  We are located on the grounds of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, across the road from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USUHS and AFRRI. 

The incumbent will work in the laboratory of Dr. Sergey Iordanskiy, to examine effect of low radiation doses on endogenous retroviruses in the context of cell transformation and neuroinflammation.  The successful candidate will utilize human cell cultures (including primary cells) and rodent models to evaluate the molecular and physiological consequences of retroviral genome activation.

  • The employee will work with and under the supervision of principal investigator on the research projects ongoing in the laboratory.  Meanwhile, he/she will conduct laboratory studies independently by completing literature searches; developing hypotheses; planning and conducting experiments and tests; recording, organizing and analyzing findings; developing conclusions.
  • Develop written and oral communications skills, including formulating and writing manuscripts, proposals and presentation of findings at national and international meetings.
  • Perform a wide variety of bench work that will include transfection of cells using plasmids and lentiviral vectors, DNA, RNA and protein isolation, quantitative PCR and RT-PCR, genome editing using CRISPR technology, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay, transcriptome analysis, western blot analysis and proteomics, quantification of experimental results and related procedures. 
  • Supervise junior research staff to include medical residents, graduate students and summer interns, to ensure that correct and safe laboratory procedures are followed; provide direction to assure completion of technical tasks and projects.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate would ideally have subject knowledge as reflected by publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals as appropriate to his/her research.  Applicants are expected to have previous experience in molecular and cellular biology including analysis of gene expression, signal transduction pathways, RNA biology and standard cell biology techniques.  Experience in retrovirology, radiobiology, transcriptome analysis, proteomics and animal models would be ideal, but is not a prerequisite for the position.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Ph.D. in molecular biology, virology, radiobiology, pharmacology or related discipline with 0 – 2 years of experience post Ph.D. or MS in the same discipline(s) with 5 plus years of related experience.

Physical Capabilities:  Position involves exposure to chemicals and biological materials in a laboratory setting.  Long periods of standing and/or walking may be required.

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment; may involve working with biohazardous materials; may require working evenings and weekends.
