HJF is seeking a Research Associate II to support research activities within the Research & Development (R&D) Section of the Department of Rehabilitation at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) located in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to WRNMMC.

The Research Associate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary research team to recruit subjects and acquire, analyze, and interpret data for a clinical research study investigating lower extremity tissue perfusion using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT imaging. The successful applicant will be responsible for presenting formal progress reports of his or her work to other members of the research team and assist in preparation of materials for conference presentations and manuscript formulation.

The employee will work with and under the supervision of the Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence Facility Research Director at WRNMMC.

US Citizenship and a personnel security background investigation are required.


  1. Assist with identification, recruitment, and enrollment of subjects into research protocol(s)
  2. Educates subjects about the research protocol, and obtains informed consent
  3. Schedules subject appointments according to research protocol requirements, ensures subjects meet appointments in timely manner
  4. The incumbent completes review documentation with sufficient lead time to maintain continued approval of study; conducts audits as required by the Health Protection Agency (FIPA), Institutional Review Board (1RB) and/or other DoD officials
  5. Record and compile subject information related to research study, such as subject demographics and subjective outcome measures
  6. Utilize clinical nuclear image analysis software to generate and export data to collaborating investigators
  7. Processes, analyzes, and interprets collected data
  8. Assist in data interpretation and analyses and prepares documents that report statistical analyses and descriptive data from study
  9. Report on status of research activities
  10. Performs other duties as assigned
  11. Identifies problems and related technical issues leading to long-term, generic solutions; identifies technical approach for solving problems and meeting research objectives and milestones

Required Knowledge. Skills, and Abilities: Ability to meet deadlines of projects; excellent interpersonal skills with subjects and clinical staff; excellent computer skills; ability to learn new computer software applications:, and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form are required.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master's degree in scientific discipline. Prior experience with coordinating and conducting clinical research studies, including those with large data sets.

Minimum Experience: 2 to 4 years' experience performing clinical research

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of sitting and standing; handling of various chemicals

Work Environment: The work environment is that of a research laboratory located in a teaching and research hospital. Position involves exposure to chemicals, biological materials, and nuclear medicine materials. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to quiet. Work is also performed in an office setting with adequate lighting, heat and air conditioning.

WRNMMC is one of the Nation's largest and most renowned military medical centers and has recently been dubbed "The Nation's Medical Center." The Department of Rehabilitation is comprised of 4 clinical services: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Orthotics and Prosthetics. These services provide multidisciplinary rehabilitative care for Service Members and retirees. The Department also houses the Biomechanics Laboratory and the Virtual Environment Laboratory, which provide clinical and research services.
